Shipwrecks

100 mins

Touched by light, immersed into water, this corpus of works, in taking notes by filming, accepts the nature of an ad-venture: through pain, as in roaming (un)familiar places, exposing itself to drift and peril.

Telemach Wiesinger
1:1
Germany, 2021, 30’ 00, 16mm, sound, Berlin Premiere

A wooden stereo viewer, which captured people with "3D" in the pioneering days of light drawing, inspired the German artist Telemach Wiesinger to create the half-hour film poem 1:1. The wide-screen image, composed on 16 mm black-and-white film, is a frame occupied by two individual images, between which - amazingly different from a stereoscope - a third dimension unfolds. In dialogue with the soundtrack designed by Alexander Grebtschenko, 1:1 becomes a unique audiovisual experience.

74 SPECIES ON AN ISLAND, ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE YEAR
Denmark, 2021, 06’ 38, 16mm, HD, sound, World Premiere

The film maps a landscape inhabited and traversed by other species over the course of one day, January first, as an elegy to time, space and the ambiguity of being.

74 Species on an Island, On the First Day of the Year is an audiovisual taxonomy of a seasonal landscape and a ritual of amassing bird sightings into blank notebooks. A ritual which in the immediate is driven by the desire to accumulate observations, as data on a blank slate. But, in the bleak Scandinavian winter landscape, it functions as a mode for honouring the natural world through all its costume changes. And the ability to sense it, and oneself anew, as part of the tradition of rekindling body and mind through the observation of other species in shared space.

74 Species on an Island, On the First Day of the Year is the third film in an annual cinematic ritual, following 54 Species on an Island, On the First Day of the Year (2018) and 62 Species on an Island, On the First Day of the Year (2017).

Anna Marziano
AL LARGO
Italy, 2020, 61’ 00, 16mm, HD, sound

Immersing us in a sea of words and images, Al largo brings us into contact with the experience of suffering. Dissolving the polarity between egoism and altruism, taking care becomes a gesture which alone seems to resist the excessive power of life. After De la mutabilité de toute chose et de la possibilité d’en changer certaines (2011), Variations ordinaires (2012) and Au-delà de l’un (2017), Anna Marziano returns to the Festival with a film inspired by readings of Nietzsche and Donald Winnicott.
