Experimental Film Treasures

Part 1

60 mins

New in 2026, Experimental Film Treasures is an all-analog section dedicated to full-length works, conceived as a focused space for films that have shaped—and continue to shape—the field of avant-garde cinema. Bringing into relation a historical work and a recent film—Carriage Trade by Warren Sonbert (USA, 1972) and 12 Asterisci by Telemach Wiesinger (Germany, 2025)—the program avoids divisions between past and present, allowing both works to resonate within a shared field of perception and duration. In doing so, it extends the festival’s engagement beyond the short format, foregrounding time not as container but as material.

Working across film and expanded cinema, Telemach Wiesinger develops a practice grounded in the material and perceptual conditions of the medium. Engaging analog formats, his work treats film as a temporal process in which projection, light, and the physical support of the image remain active elements. Rather than organizing images into stable structures, his films operate at the threshold where form begins to disperse, unfolding through repetition, minimal variation, and incremental shifts that never fully settle into resolution.

12 Asterisci (2025) extends this approach into a long-form context, where duration becomes a field of continuous modulation. The film unfolds as a sustained perceptual experience in which small shifts accumulate over time, altering the viewer’s relation to attention, rhythm, and the image itself.

12 ASTERISCI
Germany, 2025, 60’ 00”, 16mm, Berlin Premiere
Filmed across the internal and external borders of Europe, the work traces a series of geographically distant locations rendered in black and white as if suspended outside time. Moving between documentary observation and abstraction, the film constructs a continuous flow of images that displaces fixed coordinates, loosening the rigidity of political and territorial divisions. Through montage and superimposition, borders appear as unstable, historically contingent constructs rather than given realities
