Souvenirs

109 mins

Film here becomes a mémoire: a dense archive, suspended between tactile materiality and disappearance, where history drifts like fog. A ghost image emerges in the act of recalling, through preservation, devotion, observation, and repetition, dwelling within loss. Memory appears in fragments and returns. Perception wavers as images persist and dissolve; remembering becomes both accumulation and erasure. Film moves between presence and absence, closeness and distance, where details emerge as they vanish.

SERIES OF ACTIONS

Thailand, 2024, 37’ 00”, DCP, German Premiere

“Series of Actions” focuses on the origins of the idea of film archiving in Thailand that is linked to the complex web of socio-political. Through exploring the body of work of Dome Sukvong, the founder of Thai Film Archive, including his essays, books, letters, memoirs, and reports.
Chaikitiporn brings back Sukvong's archival materials to be re-reading by the voices of Thai Film Archive staff. Joel Karppanen
JOHN 9:25 / 52:9 NHOJ

Finland, 2026, 10’ 00”, 16mm, DCP, World Premiere

In 1980, 15-year-old Mika Taanila—soon to be a renowned filmmaker—recorded, under his then moniker Musiikkivyöry, a track titled We’re Becoming Blind. Here, played first in reverse, it accompanies abstract 16mm film hand-painted by contemporary teenagers and fragments from Jean-Luc Godard’s Le Mépris (1963) and Ici et ailleurs (1976). Images and sounds echo across generations: a fragile dialogue of sight and blindness, of refusal and revelation.

John Winn
REDWOOD SOUVENIRS
USA, 2025, 5’ 00”, MiniDV, DCP, European Premiere

Time spent house-sitting for Fredric Jameson from 2020 until 2022. Assembled after his death as a memento for myself and others.

Eri Saito
SLIGHTEST PRETENSE
Japan, 2025, 15’ 10”, 8mm, DCP, German Premiere

Starting from the visual phenomenon known as "scintillating scotoma," a disturbance that appears as a precursor to migraines, this work explores the uncertainty of the brain and perception through moving image. Tracing the hallucinatory descriptions in Ryunosuke Akutagawa's posthumous work Cogwheels, which closely resemble the symptoms of scintillating scotoma, alongside the connection to Kugenuma in Fujisawa — the place where Akutagawa stayed for medical treatment in his later years — the film quietly illuminates a subdued anxiety of not being able to trust one's own senses, and the fragments of feeling embedded in everyday life that resist language.

Matt Whitman
NEARER TO THEE IN A TRIPTYCH
USA, 2025, 9’ 00”, 16mm, European Premiere

Structured as a devotional triptych, this film reflects on inhabiting a house filled with belongings left behind by deceased family members. Through close studies of organic remnants gathered from the surrounding landscape and veiled domestic spaces, it sits with the tension between care, avoidance, preservation, and the impossibility of return.

Emmanuel Piton
THE GHOST IMAGE
France, 2025, 20’ 00”, 16mm, DCP, International Premiere

In the house where I grew up, something appeared once upon a time, a shape, a presence, an image that has never ceased to haunt the memory of that place. I search for traces of this apparition as if this image from the past had never left the house.
