Spacing Time

80 mins

In this program, time appears as a framed, liminal space that exceeds measurement, unfolding through its own finitude. The films bring time, space, and memory into play: glancing toward an optical unconscious, rapid montages of fragmented reconstruction, observation, and the settling of terrain into landscape anomalies. Film moves between presence and absence, intimacy and vastness, visibility and invisibility, approaching what lies beyond the frame; the familiar and the unfamiliar, past and present, persist in a continuous movement of re-encounter and loss held in tension.

Els van Riel
ELLIPTIC

Belgium, 2025, 30’ 00”, 16mm

ELLIPTIC is a filmwork that considers an image as reflecting light. It looks at how brightly a beam of light is deflected as it hits an edge and transforms the image as it enters a lens. A delicately slow focus shift carries this movement along the cone of the visual field into a certain depth, and back again. Surprises appear slowly, and disappear to make place for a next one.
Sound and Composition by Marie-Cécile Reber.

Clara Chapus
TOUT CE QU'IL Y A SUR NOTRE SOL

France, 2026, 09’ 47”, Super 8 / 16mm, DCP, World Premiere

Tidying up the artist studio of her father, a painter who died in 2020, Clara Chapus discovers three forgotten rolls of film inside a metal box. Cows in the field across the way, a teapot held aloft, the mauve of the heather, a fire in the fireplace, bygone figures and gestures: the filmmaker sees again the sites of her childhood and the gaze of her father, who explores the film medium as a new artistic possibility, as he continually juxtaposes the large and the small, the domestic and the mythical, the human and the non-human: all that there is on our soil.

Félix Caraballo
ANOMALIES DANS LE PAYSAGE
Canada, 2025, 7’ 00”, 16mm, DCP, German Premiere

Anomalies dans le paysage  is a film in four tableaux – four audiovisual landscapes that unfold in all their strangeness. Spices, leaves and local seaweed reveal and imbue with their hues this film shot and developed on the very banks of the Magtogoek/St. Lawrence river.

Ann Carolin Renninger & René Frölke
TO THE LEFT OF THE FIR-TREE
Germany, 2025, 13’ 30”, Super 8 / 16mm, DCP, Berlin Premiere

Of the eternal exuberant growth of nature, the ticking of a clock and the search for a disappeared cherry-tree.

Malena Szlam
ARCHIPELAGO OF EARTHEN BONES — TO BUNYA
Australia / Canada / Chile, 2024, 20’ 00”, 16mm, DCP, Berlin Premiere

Shot on 16mm with in-camera multiple exposures, the film explores geological time through volcanic landscapes in eastern Australia, tracing transformations across deep time with a soundscape by Lawrence English.
