Dóra Maurer

Part 1

60 mins

Dóra Maurer is a key figure in the Hungarian art scene, known for her innovative approach and her commitment to exploring the intersections between various mediums. Her work, deeply rooted in the context of an independent and vibrant artistic community, reflects a layered history of collaboration and resistance during the socialist period in Hungary.

Beginning with graphic art in the 1950s, Maurer pushed the medium’s structural boundaries before expanding into photography, experimental cinema, and installation. Her recurring focus on movement, displacement, perception, and transformation resonates throughout a diverse and evolving body of work. Often working in dialogue with musicians, and active as both educator and curator, Maurer has consistently fostered spaces for creative experimentation.

Her ability to navigate and synthesize artistic forms across media has made her a singular and influential voice in contemporary art. Unconfined by any one format, Maurer’s work remains dynamic, exacting, and deeply responsive to the world around her.

LEARNED PERFUNCTORILY MOVEMENTS
Angelernte Unwillkürliche Bewegungen, 1973, 09’ 00”, 16mm, DCP, sound
The film compares three variations of movement qualities over the same time periods.

RELATIVE SWINGS
Relatív Lengések, 1973, 10’ 00”, 35mm, DCP, sound

A study of the real and illusory nature of two kinds of swinging motion shown separately and together. Constant sound effects help to improve motion perception.

TIMING
Időmérés, 1973, 10’ 00”, 16mm, DCP, silent

Time is measured by folding a piece of white linen in front of a black background. The proportions of the cloth correspond to the picture size of a 16 mm film. It is not only the object of folding/transforming, since its projected picture is both a picture and the "carrier of the image". It shrinks and almost disappears in the process, while structuring and determining the time of the film.

PROPORTIONS
Arányok, 1979, 10’ 00”, video, DCP, silent

Demonstration of the proportions of a human body using a sheet of paper, a ruler and a pen.

TRIOLETS
Triolák, 1980, 11’ 00”, 35mm, DCP, silent

Experimental film using visual and musical effects on split screen.

KALAH
1980, 10’ 00”, 35mm, DCP, silent

In her etude made at Balázs Béla Studio, Dóra Maurer experiments with colours, forms and rhythm in the same way she does with her fine art works. The film was inspired by the Kalah, an ancient Arab board game, which two players play on a wooden board, making moves using 72 pebbles. Maurer’s Minimalist experimental film represents a specific game ending in a draw in such a way that she assigns a note and a colour to each stone.
